“Requiem: A Tribute For Loss” is the creation of Frankie Lim Rong Yao in 2020. This piece is dedicated to a year where loss, loneliness and sadness became universal and daily themes of life. With the pandemic, there has been loss of freedom, jobs, security, family, and friends. Frankie too has had to mourn the loss of his uncle, Hak-Sin. Frankie chose the elephant for his pièce maîtresse, as they are among the most expressive of creatures. Like humans, elephants experience deep, complex feelings of empathy, joy, loneliness, grief, and loss. Frankie channels his loss into this piece and during this time, Frankie contemplated the universal experience of grief and bereavement, made even more difficult during the pandemic. With the pair of wings, Frankie hopes that all pain experienced throughout the year (and in life) can eventually be released, like the flying elephant in this piece.
